Rising Sun Great Pyrenees originated from blood lines of fine purebred working dogs in Kentucky, West Virginia and Oklahoma.  Great Pyrenees have an innate
calling to bond and protect.  As a result they have over history been known as a tremendous home and family dog or a natural Livestock Guardian.  Pyrenees were
originally bred to protect the herd and take down wolves.  They are probably the original wolf in sheep's clothing.  Mountain shepherds would place a newly
weaned litter in the field with the herd for bonding.  Pyrenees looked like the flock and lived with their new family.  All was well unless the flock was
threatened.  If the wolf survived he probably thought twice before approaching another “lamb”.
Great Pyrenees found their way into the home as well.  Louis the 14th named the Pyrenees the royal dog of France.  During this time they were known as châteaux
guardians.  I can see why.  As family dogs Great Pyrenees are calm, sensitive and affectionate dogs.  They will melt your heart, love your children and in a
moments notice turn into an effective watchdog.  As Livestock Guardians they bond with the herd and will identify them as their family.  The barn and all they see
will become their charge.  Pyrenees take this duty seriously and are known to take shifts sleeping to protect the herd.  They have natural instincts to protect the
newborn and the weaker animals.

These dogs thrive in large spaces with clearly defined boundaries.  Great Pyrenees prefer to avoid conflict but will kill a threat to the herd if needed.  They are
great barkers and set a clear message out in the territory.  "Don't come around or you will face the big dog." This old and noble breed has its place in the American
Farm or Home.  Please contact us if you would like to know more about this breed or have a Great Pyrenees of your own.
